11/23/08 - Week 101
'56 Studebaker ²
First off... Here in the U.S. it is Thanksgiving week. If you are one of us that celebrates Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
I've started a project called '56 Studebaker². The ² is squared if you hadn't figured that out. The series will be all in black & white which I think is fitting for the time period of the car.
I haven't done anything in square format since I was a kid and shooting with an old Argus 75 so it has been interesting. Shooting with a DSLR or 35mm you don't think in square. You tend to think in modern day print sizes like 4 X 6 or 8 X 10 and so on. Trying to leave the extra section of the viewfinder blank in the minds eye is interesting even if you are using a focusing screen with grids on it. When you get the shots you think are framed right and then sit down and crop the shot to square you find extra or missing items in the shot.
Photographing a car is a real challenge in itself. If you have ever done it you know what I am talking about. You have to fight with reflections in both the paint and in the chrome. If you are shooting close and near something chrome there is always the challenge of keeping yourself out of the reflection. While you can use a polarizing filler to keep reflections down on the painted surfaces they do no good on chrome what so ever. You are always moving in a effort keep yourself out of the shot. I've found the best lighting conditions to be a solid cloud cover. Don't even bother trying this in bright sunlight. You will have more blown out highlights than you know what to do with.
As it is I'm about half way through the project. If you are interested in seeing other images from this project I have about twenty of them up on my current shoots page here. They will probably be there for a couple of weeks.
Have a great week. Next weeks shot will probably be from Central Oregon. |
