Guess Who's Coming To Dinner
Or in this case, Guess Who Is Dinner.
Most of the time you can see half a dozen different kinds of birds in my back yard. Run of the mill birds, hummingbirds, jays, finches and grosbeaks to name a few. It isn't often you can look out the kitchen window and see some of them.
Now and then you will look out to see no small birds at all. When that happens it's a safe bet that one of two other critters is back there somewhere. The most common is one of the neighborhood cats. Most of them keep their distance or at least stay just out of range of my slingshot. They learn fast!!
The other reason for the small birds to go into hiding is one of two hawks that like to show up now and then to leave a pile of feathers where there was once a small bird. I have no problem with this. It is the way nature works. Don't get me wrong. I don't stake small birds out like a goat to lure in the hawks but if they show up they have the right to be here.
The photo this week is a Sharp Shinned Hawk that I "shot" from my kitchen window. It is sitting on a piece of plywood that covers one of the seed feeders for the small birds. I think the hawk has it figured out.
More info on the Sharp Shinned Hawk if you are interested.
Hope you enjoy. Have a great week! |
