Oh Nuts! There Goes My Diet!
Some days you just can't resist and this was one of those days for my resident mama squirrel.
She has been hanging around here for years and is the only one of the many squirrels that hang around my yard that will take peanuts out of my hand.
Actually she can be kind of a pest when she gets in the mood for peanuts. If I'm in the shop and leave the door open she will come in looking for me. If I'm pulling weeds she will run up and just sit there where I'm weeding until she gets her peanut. If I'm here at the computer she has been known to jump up on the top of the hot tub and stare at me through the window until I notice her and come out and feed her.
I tend to keep a few peanuts in the pocket of the old shirt I slip on to go out and do yard work just so I don't have to go get some to feed her when she shows up. It also helps to have them with me to keep from getting dive bombed by the blue jay that hangs around and is just as bad when it comes to wanting peanuts.
By the way, if you ever think about hand feeding peanuts to squirrels, be sure and keep your thumb tucked in tight against your index finger. If you don't the end of your thumb can look kind of like another peanut. I discovered this fact when feeding Golden Mantel Ground Squirrels while camping but that's another story.
Hope you enjoy. Have a great week! |
