Broken..
They say that snowshoeing burns 750 calories per hour. That is a lie. After walking in them for about three hours I'm positive it is more like 1500 calories per hour that you are burning.
On the other hand if you were to ask me if it was worth it the answer would be yes. There is no doubt about it. You can go places there is no way you can walk in boots without sinking up to your butt in the snow. Some of the places you could get to on skis but I would like to see someone on them get down the trail I was on. It would make a great video if they tried it.
The area I visited is called the Hackleman Old Growth Grove and it is on Oregon's Highway 20 in the Cascade Mountains. The book says it is a .8 mile loop trail that leads to the creek and back out. This may very well be true but I won't know until the snow is out of there and I can hike the trail when I can see it. It is kind of hard to find with five feet of snow on top of it. I never found the outbound part of the loop. I traced my tracks back out.
I don't know if the vine maple in this weeks photo broke due the weight of an early and heavy snow or if it broke because another tree came down across it. Actually I don't even how tall the tree is. It's kind of hard to tell with all of the snow. Maybe I can find the same tree later this spring and find out.
If you are interested in seeing more images from the snowshoe trek you can find some here.
Hope you enjoy,
