03/28/10 - Week 171

Who says girls can't climb?

We made a trip over to Central Oregon last week and I took Wednesday morning to run down to Smith Rock State Park to do a little shooting.

Most of you know I don't do much in the way of "people shooting" but now and then I can't resist shooting someone with a Canon. Sorry, couldn't help it.

Smith Rock State Park is well known by the rock climbers as a great place to go play. Last week was Spring Break and after the sun came up and things started to warm up from the 27º it was when I got there the climbers started showing up. I switched over to the 70-200mm and wandered over to one of the climbing areas to do a little shooting. It just amazes me to watch people climb these rock walls. They find hand holds and places for their feet that I don't think I could ever use.

I want to throw something in here as far as the park and the people that use it. I visit a lot of parks and outdoor recreation areas every year and the biggest thing that will set me off is all of the trash and garbage left laying around. Candy wrappers, beer and pop cans and bottles, little toilette paper tents and just about anything else you can think of. It is a never ending battle to keep the trash out of photographs. The majority of the people that use Smith Rock are the younger set. By this I mean probably in the 18 to 25 age group. I would really like to commend this group of people on the condition the leave the park in when they are finished playing there. It is the cleanest and most litter free of any of the parks I have been in and overall some of the nicest and most polite people I have run into.

I put a couple of slide shows up on my site with more photos of the climbers and some of the landscape shots that I took if you are interested.

Don't' forget, clicking on the image to the left gets you the large version.

I hope you enjoy the image and you have a great week. From the looks of the forecast for the week it is going to be working indoors this week. It's going to be a wet one up here.

The countdown continues on the 2010 Return To Alaska trip. We are at 71 days to the return to Alaska. The passports are here along with the need to make the final payment. More info in the links below.

I have started an Alaska 2010 web site here with current information on where we stand, where we will be going and what we will be doing. When we return from the trip site photos and such will be added like I did on the Alaska 2005 site.
